Let's Talk About Sudan
Let's take a little break from the United States and look at another crisis that demands attention
In the midst of all the chaos and uncertainty here in North America, it’s easy to forget about what’s happening in the rest of the world.
The genocide in Gaza and the West Bank remain relatively top of mind, as does the war in Ukraine, but that’s because those conflicts are directly impacted by what’s going on with Donald Trump.
We’ve got tunnel vision over here.
That said, while World-Weary is focusing a lot on the United States right now, that is not truly the purpose of this newsletter. We care about human rights in general, not just those that impact my life specifically.
And right now, the largest humanitarian crisis in the world is not happening here.
It’s happening in Sudan.
Sudan is locked in a civil war that’s been going on for about two years now; the Sudanese Armed Forces are up against the Rapid Support Forces—a paramilitary group—and the violence has been amping up quite steadily since early 2023.
Currently, there are around 13 million people displaced from their homes and marching as refugees in desperate need of help.
The situation in Sudan has been bad for a few decades now, between regional conflict, disease outbreaks, famine and unsanitary water supplies, and of course, natural disasters linked to Climate Change.
The situation is dire, and it is not getting the attention that it should. People are dying. The people of Sudan need help.
Crisis in African countries often don’t get enough attention here in the West, and with the loss of funding from USAID, refugee aid groups have been left severely crippled as they try to render assistance to the families most in need.
The best things we can do here are to donate, raise awareness, and pressure our elected offocials to offer greater support.
That last one might be useless in America, but this is an election year in Canada and it’s an excellent time to turn humanitarian aid into a campaign issue.
No matter where we’re from, we’re all human beings. We are all intrinsically valuable, we all matter, and we all deserve a chance at living a good life with dignity and respect.
If you want to donate to help provide humanitarian aid in Sudan, you can reach out to several organizations that are currently on the ground.
The people of Sudan need our help. Let’s step up.
Solidarity wins.
You're right, this conflict has been in the news a lot, just not here in the west. Al Jazeera has been all over it but, they're not western media. Few in the west care about anyone on the African continent, unless you're a western corporation that's been kicked out of an African country lately, or a western military that was kicked out of an African country. Ohh, the outrage. How could they do that to us and so on. But the genocide in Sudan, sorry, we don't have time. Israel is more important, Ukraine is more important. Trump is more important. I'm guilty of that myself. I'm more concerned about my existential problems than theirs and that is what the world is boiling down to. We are now under assault from so many things, depending on where we live, that we have to triage certain things that are not a direct threat. And that is shameful.
Good on you for trying to bring more attention to this. Maybe I will use this as a wakeup call for my podcast and address this in a future show. Gods know there are plenty of articles about this being reported on Al Jazeera and RT News all the time. Are you up for a little collaboration?
