I keep watching Canadian news to see if Ottawa can manage to pull the economy up and away from the dependency of the U.S. It's going to be a hard struggle. I'm cheering for you though.
The U.S. is tumbling faster down the mountain like an avalanche. I don't think we'll recover from this next recession like before. The cultural divisions are now to great to overcome with the current politicians. I'm going to hang on as long as I possibly can and see what happens. Meanwhile, I'm scouting for an exit plan should I lose everything and need another place to go.
If you're planning on coming to Canada, don't wait until the last minute to apply. Canada is trying to cut down on immigration until we get the housing shortage problem straightened out. Meanwhile, the trickle of people trying to escape from the US is turning into a flood. Start applying to jobs here now. Start saving up to cover moving expenses and find an immigration lawyer now. Getting through the red tape takes a year at least. Also, if the Trump administration goes totally fascist, they may stop allowing people to leave. Good luck with the escape plan!
As someone who reads and watches the CBC news almost daily, I had heard of this after the Trudeau episode. I can't say as I blame all of you.
As for immigrating, I'm on hold for now. With everything that's going on, and my wife who hates the cold and snow, telling me that she doesn't want to move unless it's a real emergency, we're going to ride it out a little while longer to see what happens next year. You're right though, it's going to be a time balancing act. You confirmed something I had suspected, based on some things I had heard, that Canada's immigration department is being flooded with cowardly Americans who think moving to Canada will be their saving grace. That just goes to show how stupid some of them are. I also read that Canada is actively recruiting doctors, nurses and scientists that have been fired or purged by Trump and company. Other countries are also getting in on this as well in Europe and China. The American brain drain is on.
You do bring up another valid point in that Trump and Rubio may start revoking passports soon. Especially those of us who constantly criticize the government. If I'm forced to leave ahead of the gestapo, it may be without a passport. I'm coming up on my 70th birthday so I'm not worried about finding a job in another country anymore but they also might strip me of my Army and VA pensions and social security. Aroostook County, Maine is starting to look better and better now. I used to live there, very close to the NB border. Maybe I need to start taking another look. I still have friends up there.
Unfortunately, being over age 65 is a bit of a problem, as Canada doesn't have retirement visas. Immigrants have to be working age. So far, we've only accepted refugee claimants from the States who are trans or gay, but that could change as other groups are being threatened with violence. There are many other countries who do accept retired people, but you need to prove that you have a reliable pension. (I can't even move out of my province regardless of what happens because I'm disabled so my pension comes from the local government.)
Good luck to you! Remember that you can't do much to help anybody else if you don't look after your own safety first.
All true. I had originally thought I could qualify because I had Canadian grandparents, but it turned out that it was great grandparents that immigrated from Canada at the end of the 19th century. Oh well.
I am doing all I can to shore up defenses here and wait things out for a bit. Maybe we'll get lucky and something will drastically change things for the good here. I'm trying to be optimistic. There's always China. I hear Shanghai is nice this time of year.
