Today I went for a routine screening check up. The doctor also ordered a few extra blood tests - checking on my anemia, my glucose, etc. Just to keep an eye on some longstanding issues or potential problems related to genetic illnesses I'm at risk for.
I mentioned this to my husband, who is American. He was immediately worried and wondered if something was wrong. I was confused. He's reacted that way before when I've mentioned my routine thyroid blood tests.
Today, I finally realized why. Americans don't do that. They don't go for routine tests and check ups like that. They only get tests when their doctors think something is wrong. Otherwise they either pay out of pocket or the doctor has to fight with insurance to get it covered as medically necessary.
Preventative care like that isn't something they do. It's so fucked up.
I'm absolutely horrified Sam. I knew corporate USA was bad, only I didn't realise that it was that bad.
It's bad. Their system is shocking at times.

Fucked up is definitely the word for it Sam.
Good for you. That's a rare thing these days. I'm so glad my only boss is my wife right now.
