A Mother's Day Message
Wishing everyone all the best!
I just gave my mother her gifts. I got her some small self-care gifts, things she could use to cheer herself up when she’s stressed and in need of a little pick-me-up. She can’t have sugar or even carb-heavy foods, so edible treats are trickier to find.
Getting her chocolate, apart from very, very dark chocolate, is out of the question.
So I found things she could enjoy without eating. Scented shower bombs, a body mist that smells like sugar cookies — things she can indulge in to help her relax on a stressful day.
Her husband plans to pick up some flowers for her to add to the house and garden, as well. She asked for them specifically. Not in a bouquet — potted ones, living and breathing, that she can care for. She loves orchids inside the house. She loves seeing blossoms bloom out in the front yard.
She is often stressed these days. She deserves to smile.
Times are tough for everyone. But for mothers, those responsible for children or managing households in these tumultuous times, it’s especially rough. No matter where you are, the troubles continue to pile on at a faster and faster rate.
And with global events, I can’t help but think of those who have it even harder. How do you celebrate mothers as bombs fall on their homes? How do you celebrate through tragedy, war crimes and hatred?
At least here in Canada, we can be reasonably sure our children won’t be harmed at school or in daycare. Apart from the odd accident, of course.
I have none of my own. But I told my spouse that if we plan to have little ones, we won’t be doing it in the U.S., and that was before Trump.
I couldn’t take the risk there now. Not a chance.
For every mother who is dealing with those risks, my heart goes out to you today. You are a warrior.
Whether you’re cis or trans, a biological mother or an adoptive one or a stepmother, a mother who lost her child, or if you’ve stepped in to be a mother figure to someone who doesn’t have a good mom at home, I don’t care. Today is for you.
You’re an absolute warrior for doing what you do.
You are a hero. Today, and every other day. I wish things were better for you and for your children.
And I wish you all the best on this Mother’s Day, and a brighter future tomorrow.

I hear everyone talking about this being Mothers Day so I had to go look at the calendar. Sure enough, it is. I was expecting it to be closer to the end of the month. So, happy Mother's Day to all. I used to celebrate with my own late mother when I lived close by her house years ago. I guess I may have to send a message out to my daughter and daughter in-laws later today.
A kind and thoughtful message Sam and one that's appreciated. The whole point and reason for this special day so often gets buried under rampant commercialisation which is pretty damn shameful and upsetting to those of us like me who are struggling on with doing our best to look after a disabled daughter.
